Project portfolio scope
Planview ProjectAdvantage, formerly Sciforma, is project portfolio management software for organisations that need to evaluate demand, prioritise investments and govern delivery across multiple projects. The current product scope covers portfolio selection, resource capacity, financial control, project planning, dashboards and reporting. It is intended for coordinated portfolio decisions rather than only personal task management.
Evaluation scenario
Build a representative portfolio with proposed, approved and active initiatives. Add strategic drivers, expected benefits, budgets, milestones, dependencies and resource demand. Ask a portfolio committee to compare two funding scenarios, approve one plan and then respond to a budget cut or scarce-skill constraint. The trial should show whether the product exposes consequences before commitments change.
Demand and prioritisation
Test intake from idea through business case and approval. Define scoring criteria that reflect strategy, risk, value and mandatory work, then inspect how overrides are recorded. A useful evaluation separates transparent evidence from automatic ranking: decision makers should be able to see assumptions, challenge a score and explain why lower-ranked work was deferred.
Resource and financial planning
Model named people, roles, skills, rates and available capacity at the level the organisation can maintain. Compare project demand with supply across periods and portfolios. Test part-time assignments, shared specialists and delayed hiring. Add planned and actual costs, then reconcile totals with the finance and workforce systems that remain authoritative.
Delivery control
Create schedules, milestones, risks and cross-project dependencies for a small programme. Delay one critical activity and check how forecasts, resource conflicts and portfolio dashboards respond. Evaluators should verify that project teams can update delivery data without duplicating work solely to support executive reporting, and that integration ownership is explicit.
Governance and reporting
Configure roles for executives, portfolio managers, project managers, finance and resource owners. Test stage gates, approvals, audit history and scenario permissions. Build role-specific dashboards and reproduce who changed priority, budget or dates. Reports should reveal stale or incomplete inputs instead of presenting unsupported precision.
Rollout checkpoint
Start with one portfolio and one existing governance cadence. Measure decision lead time, reporting effort, unresolved data issues and late resource conflicts. Expand only when the pilot can complete a repeatable planning cycle, reconcile financial and capacity data, and preserve an auditable decision history without shadow spreadsheets becoming the real system of record.
