Financial close scope
BlackLine is a cloud platform for financial close and consolidation. Its current official scope includes account reconciliations, transaction matching, journal entries, task management, consolidation, reporting and analysis. Buyers should define which modules are in the proposed subscription and separate the core close process from adjacent intercompany and invoice-to-cash products before comparing capabilities.
Evaluation scenario
Run a controlled month-end close for several entities using a small ledger extract. Prepare two reconciliations, match a transaction set, post or review a journal, complete dependent close tasks and generate a consolidated report with a variance that needs explanation. Ask preparers, reviewers and a controller to trace every status, adjustment, supporting document and sign-off from the report back to the source record.
Reconciliation and matching controls
Configure representative account templates, certification rules, materiality thresholds and review assignments. Introduce an unmatched transaction, an ageing item and an account that should not auto-certify. Confirm how exceptions are surfaced, who can resolve them and whether the audit trail preserves the original evidence. For transaction matching, test source normalization, matching rules, tolerances and the treatment of duplicates.
Close workflow and journals
Build a close calendar with dependencies, due dates, owners and reviewer gates. Test late work, reassignment and a task reopened after completion. Evaluate journal preparation, supporting evidence, approvals and posting integration only for the licensed configuration. The close dashboard should reveal blockers without encouraging teams to mark incomplete work as finished merely to improve reported progress.
Reporting and consolidation
Generate entity and group reports, review currency translation or consolidation adjustments where relevant, and drill from a statement or variance to supporting activity. Reconcile displayed totals to the controlled source set. Confirm how mappings, ownership structures, commentary and report definitions are governed, and record any differences between real-time operational views and formally approved financial statements.
Security and administration
Test preparer, reviewer, administrator and read-only roles using realistic entity restrictions. Review authentication, audit history, retention, exports, integrations and recovery from a failed data load. AI-assisted preparation or analysis should be evaluated with known-answer cases, clear reviewer accountability and a method for identifying unsupported output before it reaches reporting.
Rollout checkpoint
Start with a bounded close process and a small set of accounts whose current procedures and evidence are understood. Document integration ownership, rule changes, reconciliation quality, late tasks and reporting discrepancies. Expand only when finance owners can explain the configuration, reviewers can reproduce decisions from the audit trail and the new workflow reduces manual reconciliation without creating a parallel spreadsheet close.
